Is Japan Losing the Word “Pantī”?
Dear international readers, I have worrying news. Japan may be losing one of its most wonderful words: “PANTĪ” (パンティー)!
In Japanese, pantī, pantsu, and shōtsu can all refer to underwear. But they feel different. Shōtsu sounds at home in a lingerie store. Pantsu is an everyday word. And pantī? To me, it sounds like classic Japanese comedy.
A sudden gust of wind. A surprised face. And a very happy old man!
Is that scientific? Of course not! Welcome to the JFD Fetish Lab!
Oolong: The Hero Who Protected “Pantī”
Remember Oolong from Dragon Ball? Just as the villain Pilaf was about to wish for world domination, Oolong shouted his own wish first: “I want a pair of panties!”
Not money. Not power. Panties!
That outrageous moment became unforgettable. And I have a theory: Oolong helped keep the Japanese word “pantī” alive in our memories!
Did he plan to protect Japanese vocabulary? Of course not. He just wanted panties.
Japan’s Lost 30 Years… and Another Crisis!
After Japan’s economic bubble collapsed, the country experienced decades of economic stagnation, often called the “Lost 30 Years.”
But the JFD Fetish Lab is worried about something else: the word “pantī”!
Historical figures cited from surveys by Japanese lingerie company Wacoal show that 7% of respondents chose “pantī” in 2009, compared with 5% in 2016.
ONLY 5%?!
These figures are from past surveys. They do not tell us how everyone in Japan speaks today. But to this completely unscientific research lab, that is an emergency!
We cannot let “pantī” disappear!
The Japanese Old Men Who Never Forgot
Yet the word was still there in 2016. Why? I have a theory.
Oolong made “pantī” legendary. And generations of wonderfully dirty-minded Japanese old men never forgot it.
They heard the word. They laughed. They used it in jokes. And they kept remembering it.
No government funding. No research grants. Just an enormous love for a wonderfully silly word!
Is there scientific proof that these men saved “pantī”? Absolutely not!
But here at the JFD Fetish Lab, we like this ridiculous theory.
Thank You, Oolong! ♡
Oolong did not invent the word “pantī.” But his famous wish made it unforgettable for Dragon Ball fans.
And generations of Japanese men kept enjoying the joke.
Thank you, Oolong!
Thank you, Japan’s wonderfully dirty-minded old men!
Let’s keep “pantī” alive! ♡
